Initiatives

“We are proud to have developed an excellent team of competent migrant and refugee leaders who are able to document evidence of human rights and labour violations.”

Legal Cases

Notably, NSIs most recent and high-profile case was the allegations of forced labour that surfaced against multinational companies Good-year Tire & Rubber, and Sime Darby.

Under pressure, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co reached an agreement to settle a labour dispute at its Malaysian factory with migrant workers who alleged unpaid wages and benefits.

Training

At the Grassroots Level

Our training programs are designed to empower migrant workers and create community leaders; enabling them to take control of their lives, promote their rights, and contribute positively to the society regardless of nationality, gender, or status. Some of the training provided by NSI include language courses, occupational safety and health training, legal literacy training, and financial management training. We also promote HIV & Mental Health Awareness to the communities.

Community Development

Indonesia

We work with the Indonesian Migrant  Community on labour and abuse cases, unpaid salaries, assist in medical emergencies and provide strategic litigation in key cases. If you would like to report a violation or make a complaint, do contact one of our community leaders by clicking on the link below.

Bangladesh

We work with the Bangladeshi Migrant  Community on labour and abuse cases, unpaid salaries, assist in medical emergencies and provide strategic litigation in key cases. Currently we are also training migrant workers in using the SafeStep App, a platform that aids in their safety in the migration process.

Nepal

We work with the Nepali Migrant  Community on labour and abuse cases, unpaid salaries, assist in medical emergencies and provide strategic litigation in key cases. Currently we are also researching the alarming numbers of Sudden Deaths within the Nepali migrant community.

Myanmar

Myanmar refugees have been seeking asylum in Malaysia primarily due to the ongoing conflict and persecution in their home country. NSI works to empower and support Myanmar refugees in Malaysia by providing them with access to essential services and advocating for their rights and dignity. We continue to push for policy changes that would improve the lives of refugees in Malaysia. In partnership with Red Cross and the Zomi Community, we provide Mobile Health Clinics. Weekly English and Bahasa Malaysia language classes are ongoing.

Pakistan

Pakistani Refugees face a number of challenges in Malaysia. Refugees in Malaysia often lack access to basic necessities such as housing, education, healthcare, and employment. They may also face discrimination and xenophobia, as well as difficulties navigating the legal system. NSI works to raise awareness of the challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers, and to promote policies and practices that respect their rights and dignity. We are committed to supporting refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia, including those from Pakistan, and to advocating for their rights and dignity.

Emergency Shelter

Currently there is a lack of Emergency Shelters available for male migrant workers and refugees. To fill this gap, NSI established a Solidarity House that provides temporary, short-term stay in cases of urgency for male migrant workers and refugees. Referrals to various other shelter homes run by our trusted partners are available to women seeking refuge.

If you would like to support the Solidarity House, your donation would be appreciated.

Sustainable Farming

NSI empowers local small-scale farmers to cope with the commoditization of food in the age of large scale agribusiness. We collaborate with various partners like Pesticide Action Network Asia Pacific (PAN AP), Sri Lovely Organic Valley- Sik, Kedah (agroecology specialist), Japanese Fund For Global Environment (JFGE) others to develop and promote sustainable agroecology based solutions.
