Definition of a Gig Worker

Gig work is a recent trend or type of work that consist of income earning activities that are outside of the standard, long-term employee – employer work arrangement or relationship.

Gig work includes workers working from home (independent contractors), and location-based work such as e-hailing (drivers) and p-hailing (deliverers).

Globally, gig workers especially platform workers receive meagre protection due to the non-existence of regular employment policies. This in turn makes their labour to be categorized as being informal and vulnerable. Platform workers are obligated to follow the rules and regulations set forth by the employer/platform and/or the government.
